Things I know and things I don't

Updated: Aug 17, 2023

It is almost Valentine's Day. It's not a day that I get too excited about. I don't get caught up in the cards and hearts and chocolates. I have been with my partner for 22 years and Valentine's Day seems a bit "cute" for us - a little too contrived. And besides it is economically manipulative. Shut up and enjoy it, a friend tells me. Lovely.

Here are some things I know.

Love isn't one thing. It's a thousand little things. (A million?) Like these pebbles on the beach, some are smooth and round, others are rough and irregular. Some are dull and unremarkable, some are colors that my heart could never imagine.

Love is hard. The funny thing about our language is that hard can mean something difficult or it can refer to the density of a thing. (Both apply.)

Love is immense. It is pebbles scattered on a beach. But it is also every grain of sand. Every boulder and every river rock. It is volcanic and as soft as chalk crumbling in your hand.

Love is mine. Because of you.
